Why AQUA-THERAPY?

Aquatic Rehabilitation is fast becoming a leading therapeutic exercise alternative. Water is an ideal treatment medium for patients with painful joints and weak muscles. Only water can provide consistent resistance throughout range of motion while offering support for injured or otherwise weak areas. The buoyancy of water dramatically decreases stress on weight bearing joints, bones and muscles. In addition, water promotes general muscular relaxation and provides consistent resistance throughout a range of motion while also offering support for injured or otherwise weak areas.

Patient populations benefiting from this form of therapy include those with:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Joint Replacements
  • Low back Syndromes
  • Cervical (Neck) Pathologies
  • Chronic Pain
  • Post Surgical Debilitation
  • Sports Injuries
  • Overuse Injuries
  • Loss of Motion
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Post Mastectomy Restrictions
  • Fibromyalgia

Southern Tier Physical Therapy Associates
’ aquatic therapy rehabilitation program, provides many of these patients with a variety of positive treatment results.

The benefits of AQUA-THERAPY are:

  • Decreased pain
  • Increased mobility
  • Increased strength
  • Improved coordination
  • Increased muscular endurance
  • Increased relaxation
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved posture
  • Improved cardiovascular status

The buoyancy, movement and resistance of water account for the benefits of aquatic rehabilitation. Results may consist of improved range of motion, strength, flexibility, endurance and function.

Buoyancy results in a 90% decrease in body weight when a patient stands in water at neck height. Individuals concerned with excess pressure on their ankles, knees, hips and back benefit tremendously from this one principle.

Movement and resistance properties allow patients a great deal of control...the patient is in charge! The greater the speed of movement, the greater the resistance and vice-versa.

Southern Tier Physical Therapy Associates, a leader in the field of orthopedics and sports/industrial rehabilitation, has installed a state of the art therapeutic pool in the new Front Street location.

STPTA’s two stage AQUA-THERAPY program begins with one-to-one treatment in the pool with a licensed physical therapist. Hands on techniques such as Bad Ragaz and WATSU are utilized by the therapist. As patients’ progress and treatment goals are met they are advanced to the next stage. In stage two, continued progression and fine tuning of individually tailored exercise programs is accomplished while fostering patient independence. Our objective is to progress patients to a fully independent exercise program designed to maintain and improve health and functional abilities. Typically pool therapy is used in conjunction with regular therapy in either of the two STPTA offices.

Come join STPTA in the AQUA-THERAPY program and receive: One-to-One Therapy: an initial evaluation followed by 30 minute sessions with a licensed physical therapist. A Team Approach: Physicians, therapists and patients work together. Unsurpassed Care: STPTA’s number one priority.

STPTA’s beautiful new heated therapeutic pool provides the only such on-site facility for aqua-therapy in the area. This allows for the integration of water therapy with other conventional physical therapy treatment and modalities. The therapeutic pool, installed by Advanced Pools and Spas, contains a Foxx two-person Buddy Seat which is equipped with 12 Dimension One Hydraflex therapeutic jets and two Volcan foot jets.

The facility is ideally suited for therapeutic exercise in the warm water plus the additional benefits derived from the use of the pulsating effect of the air and water jets.
