General and Orthopedic Therapy
STPTA specializes in the
treatment of a variety of orthopedic and musculoskeletal diagnoses
stemming from industrial or sports injury, neck and back pain, strains
and sprains, pre and post surgery, degenerative disease, joint
replacements, conditions involving the extremities including shoulder,
elbow, hip, knee, ankle and foot.
Athletes
STPTA has considerable
experience working with athletes of all ages and levels of play from
youth programs to high school to college to professional athletes. The
goal is to return the injured player to his or her sport in a rapid and
safe time frame. Immediate and professional care in the case of sports
injuries is very important in determining the speed and extent of their
recovery. A full range of equipment and modalities is used to treat
these injuries.
Aqua-Therapy
STPTA offers the area's only on-site
Aqua-Therapy program in the 7000 gallon heated, therapeutic pool in the
Vestal facility. A specialty trained physical therapist uses hands-on
techniques such as Bad Ragaz and WATSU to achieve positive results.
Water therapy may be used in conjunction with traditional therapy. The
buoyancy, movement and constant resistance of the warm water account for
the benefits derived from aqua-therapy. This program is directed by
Renee Barkwell-Wilson, PT, OCS, ATRIC.
Functional Capacity
Evaluations
STPTA provides Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) for
injured workers. A Lift Station and BTE Work Simulator are used in
preparing computer generated reports for the FCEs. Work Simulation
and work specific exercises are utilized in a controlled environment
designed to help the injured worker return to his/her job in a safe
and timely manner.
Seniors
STPTA recognizes the need to maintain the quality of life
among the area's senior citizens who want to enjoy active, pain-free
life styles. Seniors with neck, back and shoulder pain and/or those
receiving joint replacements or other surgical procedures are treated
using the various modalities and exercise equipment under the direction
of the physical therapist. The aim is to once again enjoy an active,
high quality life in the senior years.
TMJ
STPTA treats patients
with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Treatment is rendered in
the Binghamton office by Matt Myette, PT. Treatment may include
relaxation of tight muscles and ligaments as well as mobilization of the
TMJ.
Women's Therapy Services
STPTA offers a series of programs
specifically addressing diagnoses that are either unique or more common
with women. These include post mastectomy rehab, lymphedema (arm and
breast), pre/post natal problems such as low back pain, post C-section
strengthening, incontinence, fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.
This program is directed by Pat Foley, PT in the Binghamton office.
Empire Assessment Group
The Empire Assessment Group (EAG)
performs medical assessments to determine schedule loss of use or
classification of physical disability. Local physicians perform
evaluations and objective testing (Cybex, Lido, BTE and other functional
tests) to determine extent of disability. EAG
provides these assessments for local attorneys who represent clients
with worker's compensation claims and social security assessments.
Pain Management
STPTA provides the physical therapy and rehabilitation
support for the Southern Tier Pain Management Center, founded
by Dr. Sanford E. Geller. The purpose of this center is to combine the
disciplines of physical medicine, clinical psychology, and physical
therapy in a team approach to address and alleviate the symptoms of both
acute and chronic pain. Traditional therapy techniques as well as
aqua-therapy are used.
